Which First Aid Course Do I Need? A Straightforward Guide for Employers, Childcare Providers & Individuals
The most frequently asked question from our customers to the Help! HQ office is definitely;
“How do I choose the right first aid course for myself, my business, or my childcare setting?”
And we get it—between workplace regulations, HSE, Ofsted guidelines, and different course names, it can feel like a minefield.
Read on for Help! First Aid Training's guide to making your choices easy.
How to choose the right first aid course
To make the right decision for you or your workplace, we recommend that you consider:
- The type of work that you do
- The size and layout of your site or premises
- The number of people on-site, including staff, visitors, and the public
- The types of accidents you’re most likely to encounter
For most workplaces, Help! First Aid Training recommends having a mix of staff trained in both Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work.
If you work with babies or children (e.g. nurseries, schools, childminders), then Paediatric First Aid is a must, especially with new guidlines for the EYFS Framework coming into effect very soon.
The first aid courses we offer
Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day)
A fully HSE-compliant course ideal for low-risk workplaces or as a basic introduction to first aid.
This course covers how to respond quickly and confidently to medical emergencies.
First Aid at Work (3 days)
Our most comprehensive workplace first aid course. Fully HSE-compliant, it’s suited for medium to high-risk environments, such as construction sites, factories, and large offices, or those who need a broader, more in-depth knowledge of first aid.
Paediatric First Aid (12 hours)
This is a 2-day course, which is fully H.S.E. and Ofsted compliant and meets the guidelines for Surestart, Childminding UK and the Early Years Framework.
Not only for those in a childcare setting, this course is useful for new parents or parents-to-be too.
My first aid certificate is about to expire, how do I re-qualify?
Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work, Re-qualification First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid are all certified for three years.
When your certificate is due to expire, you’ll need to book the right refresher course.
· Emergency First Aid at Work, book another Emergency First Aid at Work course.
· Paediatric First Aid, book another Paediatric First Aid course.
· If your First Aid at Work certificate is about to expire, or has recently expired, choose a 2-day Re-qualification First Aid at Work course.
· If your First Aid at Work certificate has expired some time ago, choose a 3-day First Aid at Work course.
The H.S.E. allows ‘a reasonable amount of time’ between a First Aid at Work certificate expiring and a Re-qualification First Aid at Work course being attended.
At Help! First Aid Training, we would advise a lapse of no more than three months.
